Considered a gift of the Dreamtime, the Kakadu Plum has been an important source of bush food, antiseptic and a healing remedy for northern Australian Indigenous people for millennia. High in folate, iron and Vitamin E and containing vastly more antioxidants than the blueberry, the magnificent Kakadu Plum has the highest recorded levels of Vitamin C in the world, measuring up to 100 times the Vitamin C content found in an orange.
The Kakadu Plum is devoured by Aboriginal children when in season and eaten by adults on hunting trips for quick boosts of energy and to quench thirst.
HOW TO USE
Resembling the delightful aroma of stewed apples and pears, with some cooked citrus and floral musk essence, it introduces a unique and tangy punch to your palette. The Kakadu flavours have in fact been compared to that of the English gooseberry.
The fruit can be used in cooking to add a cutting flavour to your dishes or added to smoothies, shakes and snacks in its powdered form as a sustenance boost.
If you haven’t heard, Kakadu Plum is the world’s highest natural source of Vitamin C! 100 times that of a mandarin. We love getting our dose of Vitamin C first thing in the morning with a delicious smoothie.
GROWING & PROCESSING
The Australian Superfood Co sources its Kakadu Plum from the Palngun Wurnangat Association (PWA); a women’s organisation based in Wadeye, Northern Terrritory. Wadeye has the largest Aboriginal community in Australia. PWA oversees a range of community-based projects designed to preserve and promote Indigenous culture and tradition, whilst fostering self-sustaining organisations run by and for Indigenous people.
One of the PWA’s most exciting success stories is the harvesting and picking of the Kakadu Plum. This venture provides up to 200 seasonal picking jobs to people who were previously unemployed.
PWA has recently purchased new equipment and implemented policies and procedures in order to ensure the long-term stability of their Kakadu Plum business. The shared income will support growth and investment in their community. The Australian Superfood Co is thrilled to contribute to the development and economic stability of this community.
